CARTOGRAPHY OF POSIDONIA

The Atlas of Posidonia oceanica has entailed exhaustive cabinet and field work that has allowed the marine habitats in the Balearic Islands to be identified through different techniques, including the Side Sweep Sonar or the photo-interpretation of satellite images. The final result of this project is a cartography with a greater level of detail of Posidonia oceanica on the seabed of the Balearic Islands. The last phase of this project has consisted in the development of the “Posidònia GOIB” App, which allows any user to know, through geolocation and in real time, the seabed on which they intend to anchor. Make sure that the anchoring will be done correctly and never over Posidonia oceanica.

The main objective of the project is to improve knowledge of the distribution of Posidonia oceanica grasslands in the Balearic Islands, specifically in the islands of Formentera, Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca, as well as to make available to citizens, especially users of recreational boats, information with the exact location of Posidonia oceanica meadows.

The purpose is to integrate this reference cartography into the APP developed by the Government of the Balearic Islands “Posidonia GOIB”, which will allow any user through this APP to know exactly through geolocation and in real time, where they can anchor recreational boats, thus preventing Posidonia oceanica meadows from suffering any harm.
