Posidonia Surveillance Service
Purpose
The purpose of the service is to conserve protected marine habitats, especially Posidonia oceanica. The service is tasked to oversee and inform about the anchoring prohibition in Posidonia areas and provide advice to large vessels to avoid impacts on this seagrass before or during anchoring maneuvers.
Resources
The service has a fleet of 18 patrol boats monitoring the waters of the Balearic Islands, plus one contributed by the Consell de Menorca and coordinated in Fornells.
Objectives
- Provide information to sailors about Posidonia and regulations regarding it.
- Offer anchoring assistance via VHF Channel 68.
- Verify that anchors are deployed correctly using visual inspections and mirrors.
- Promote a change of behavior and encourage compliance with the Posidonia Decree.
- Collaborate with Environmental Agents and other relevant authorities.

Season and Location of the Boats
The boats are assigned and distributed across different lots or islands from June 1 to September 30. Additionally, a coordination boat is available for all lots from May 15 to October 10.
